"It is an honor to have him beside me the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Johannis. This shows the fact that agriculture receives the support needed to showcase what is happening in Romania, especially after 2007, in the context of the important fundings brought by Romania's adherence to the European Union and national budgetary efforts. We look around and see that agriculture has progressed enormously. It is a modern agriculture at European level: Romania is number two in corn production, number three in sheep production and in the leading places with the cultivation of grain", the minister said in his opening remarks.
The minister reviewed the significant funding which benefited Romanian agriculture after joining the European Union, both the allocation of 2007-2013 and the current, 2014-2020, contributing substantially to modernize and develop the agricultural sector, including by equipping farmers with the next generation technology and the purchase of breed animals.
After the opening, the officials visited the stands of exhibitors, of great interest being the agricultural machineries, the paddocks with animals - cows, sheep, goats and the ones with traditional products.
President’s Klaus Johannis interest for Romanian agriculture and food industry materialized into a comprehensive debate with local farmers and processors, the main topics of discussion aiming the evolution and prospects of development of the Romanian agricultural sector, its vulnerabilities and opportunities.
Divided into five main themes – irrigation, association, land, market and young farmers - the dialogue between the Romanian president and the farmers was a special occasion of vertical communication on the problems faced by the domestic agricultural sector and the expectations of the farmers from state authorities regarding investment and creating a predictable economic environment. "There are good signs for our agriculture that can become a true engine of economic growth both in performance and in competitiveness. But for this our agriculture needs investments, applied research, engineering and the latest equipment, techniques and technologies (...) ", said President Klaus Johannis.
In turn, Minister Achim IRIMESCU recalled the efforts made this year to simplify procedures for both the submission of dossiers for grants and the submission of dossiers for accessing European funds, opening markets for sheep, cattle and pigs, drafting the legislation to send agricultural attachés in E.U. Member States and third countries to promote food products.
